John Kirk
AIA
Principal
John Kirk brings more than 35 years of experience to his role as a Principal in Corgan’s Urban, Campus & Culture sector in Corgan’s New York studio. An award-winning architect, John has been a lead designer on over seventy-five urban design, master planning, and architectural assignments. His work is characterized by a deep understanding of how thoughtfully planned environments can strengthen identity and foster a vibrant sense of place.
John is known for being a prolific designer responsible for a prodigious output of work: sketches, diagrams, design ideas, details, vignettes, and renderings – all in freehand sketch form in pencil, pen, marker, and brush – as well as a valued mentor to his colleagues. He believes an architect should take their cues from the context, be sensitive to the setting, and achieve their clients’ aspirations in ways that are sound, elegant, and timeless; that what elevates mere buildings to architecture is not gratuitous willfulness, rather it is masterful plan-making, proportion, and detail.
His portfolio includes the master plan and design for Lyford Cay International School in the Bahamas, the River District Master Plan in Charlotte, North Carolina, the master plan and architectural design for Farmington Country Club in Charlottesville, Virginia (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and the master plan for Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). At his alma mater, the University of Virginia, he worked on renovations and additions to Newcomb Hall, the University’s 175,000 SF Student Center, and additions to The Miller Center of Public Affairs.
John earned a Master of Architecture from the University of Virginia, Bachelor of Science from the Georgia Institute of Technology and studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, France. John is a registered architect in New York, New Jersey, Virginia, West Virginia, South Carolina, and Colorado. He also served as an associate professor at the University of Virginia.
