Arizona Oncology Prescott Cancer Center
A desert environment where patients can thrive
When our long-time healthcare client wanted to open a new cancer center in Prescott to consolidate their medical practice in one location they turned to Corgan to design the ground-up construction and interior finish out of their new stand-alone oncology treatment clinic. Designed around wellness and holistically treating the patient, the project provides a spacious 34-chair infusion area with an adjacent outdoor area for patient use, 15 total medical, gynecologic, and radiation oncology exam rooms, two procedure rooms, a PET-CT imaging room, and additional patient and staff support spaces. Grounded in a flexible design, the center is designed to thrive in the desert environment and reflect the calm beauty of the natural surroundings.
Designed for flexibility and growth
Future-proofing the space was top of mind, allowing the building to adapt to the changing needs of the organization without building out empty space to simply sit and wait for a purpose. As a growing organization, gathering all stakeholders early in the process and maintaining consistent communication and expectations established consensus amongst the different groups, streamlining the decision-making process. The design team took into account planned expansions of the facility in the design for two linear accelerators planned as a future addition, open spaces to allow for flexibility in layout, and future-proofed plumbing behind walls to accommodate additional exam rooms. Emphasizing patient comfort and convenience, a mobile emergency EMT pad allows an imaging truck to pull on-site to double CT capacity. A covered porte-cochere provides a patient drop-off point for those with limited walking abilities.
A calm space for patients to relax and rejuvenate
The cancer center draws inspiration from the desert environment to create warm, calming spaces for patients to relax during visits. The exterior design inspiration comes from the local use of natural honest materials in warm and inviting color and texture combinations. Infusion bays oriented to the north side of the building maximize windows to take advantage of north light. Located next to a secluded patient garden, the infusion room offers patients receiving infusions to enjoy an abundance of natural light, views of a beautifully landscaped scene, and shade/shadows that transform the space throughout the day.
