Making Sparks fly

The Vantage NV1 campus in Sparks, Nevada, covers 137 acres and will deliver 224 megawatts of critical IT load across three buildings — one four-story, one two-story and one single-story — totaling 870,000 square feet. Once operational, the NV1 campus will support both current needs and long-term performance, pairing high densities — up to 720 watts per square foot — and flexible operational spaces with polished offices, conference rooms and break areas. From site planning to interior amenities, Corgan guided the project with the goal of designing a durable, efficient data center as well as a welcoming place to work. The four-phased project will be delivered with the first facility coming online in mid-2026 and the second in late 2027.

Shaped by sustainability

Sustainability guided the design of the NV1 campus, shaping everything from the larger operations plan down to the everyday details. Corgan aligned the project with Vantage’s environmental goals by planning buildings that operate efficiently and use renewable energy when possible. A closed-loop water-cooling system supports strong performance and keeps water and energy use minimal.

The campus will pursue LEED certification, with practical features that contribute over time, including recycling programs, motion-sensor LED lighting and drought-tolerant landscaping. From site planning and building systems to occupant spaces and sustainability, Corgan shaped NV1 to reflect a forward-looking approach that balances performance and environmental stewardship.

Set your sites high

Set on a challenging, hilly site, the primary design challenge was minimizing extensive grading while meeting the client's ambitious IT capacity and schedule goals. By transitioning from a sprawling initial layout to optimized, multi-story prototypes, the team successfully reduced the site pad by 40%. Increased rack densities also allowed for higher capacity in a smaller building footprint. Corgan balanced this tighter vertical footprint with rigorous Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis to confirm that generator exhaust would not compromise rooftop chiller efficiency.

While planning the campus, the design team gave careful attention to the power and cooling systems that allow the buildings to operate dependably every day. The plan includes multiple layers of backup across core infrastructure to support continuity and long-term resilience. A dedicated 500 MW on-site substation and service from the region’s primary utility provider anchor the power strategy.

 

Cohesive and connected

Highly visible from the adjacent freeway, the four-story NV11 building establishes a strong, branded look for the hillside campus on a strict budget. Using Vantage's sail logo as its inspiration, the design team envisioned a prominent corner curtain wall block to highlight the administrative space and visually connect to adjacent buildings. To minimize costly glazing, Corgan adapted this concept by using strategic punch windows and patterned precast panels that maintain a dynamic, rhythmic exterior. Anchored by a signature blue metal entry wall, this cost-effective design delivers a memorable freeway presence and sets a cohesive architectural language for the entire site.

Beyond the project’s operational demands, Corgan designed NV1 as a campus that supports its occupants. Office suites and work areas can be tailored to different occupants, tailoring each space to reflect a team’s specific needs while remaining part of a cohesive whole. Secure storage areas are positioned for convenient access, and conference rooms are distributed across the campus to support collaboration and daily function. The new facilities will also offer multiple fiber routes, two Meet-Me-Rooms and two entry points per building, giving tenants flexible, carrier-neutral service with built-in path diversity.
