A Growing Community
In order to accommodate the district’s growing student population, Sinton ISD in Texas needed a new high school designed to support the needs of future students and teachers. Spanning more than 200,000 square feet, the building will house 1,000 students and includes collaborative academic spaces, career and technical education (CTE) focused labs, a state-of-the-art library, fine art suite with a black-box theatre, competitive athletic facilities, and an events lobby for a new 1,000-seat performing art center.
A Place To Gather
Driving design factors for the modern campus included creating a “place” for the community as Sinton expects unprecedented growth; designing for the coastal climate with resiliency in mind; bringing the outdoors in; and inspiring students, teachers and staff with a state-of-the-art facility. The school’s large windows are a triple-paned glazing system that enhances resiliency against the coastal climate while still allowing natural light to flood classrooms, which has been shown to improve focus and mental health.
It was also important that the design maintained the spirit of the community and Sinton Pirates traditions. To keep a piece of its history, a terrazzo medallion of the school’s Pirate mascot from the former school’s entry was salvaged and relocated to Pirate Park, a public park next to the school created to celebrate Sinton’s history and provide a tangible connection to its heritage.
Work Hard, Play Hard
The school’s robust academic program has five areas of study that cover arts and humanities, multidisciplinary, public service and health science, business and industry, and STEM. Thus, the CTE offerings — robotics, welding, construction science, and health sciences — were driven by input from the programs and community need. The new fine arts wing with a black-box theater and events lobby for the performing art center supports the school’s arts program and extracurricular activities.
In addition to the new academic facilities, the Pirate Athletic Center provides student athletes with a 60-yard indoor practice facility, weight room, and film screening theater in addition to the football, baseball, and softball stadiums on site. The large weight room was designed as a central feature to the Pirate Athletic Center, located with direct access to and from the indoor practice field. Large windows provide visibility in and out, building on a culture of pride and strong work ethic. The original weight room’s branding — “Pirate Iron Works” — was re-created to inspire students and connect them to the history of the Pirate Athletes and to reinforce the pillars of unity, integrity, discipline and strength.
