Vision and design intent
The Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) sought to reimagine their existing Washington, D.C. office space in alignment with a refreshed brand identity and the evolving demands of today’s workplace. A leading voice in the nuclear energy industry, NEI required an environment that authentically reflected their contemporary organizational identity while accommodating a broad spectrum of functional needs, from high-level board meetings with global stakeholders to dynamic, day-to-day collaboration.
The workspace was designed to feel simultaneously forward-looking and firmly rooted in the company’s core values. This vision was distilled into a singular concept phrase: “nuclear evolved” – an expression of transformation, progress, and purpose translated into built form.
Design strategy and material language
With a strong architectural framework already in place, the design team sought to layer new spatial strategies and refined finishes to best reflect NEI’s growth and modern direction. The existing rigid, rectilinear layout was softened through the introduction of sweeping curves, introducing a sense of movement and fluidity that speaks to the industry’s own evolution.
Hard, cool surfaces gave way to warm wood tones, soft ambient lighting, and tactile materials, establishing a grounded, inviting atmosphere that aligns with NEI’s values of safety, responsibility, and innovation. A defining feature of the transformation is the three-story stair, elevated from a utilitarian necessity into a compelling architectural statement through the addition of a custom light fixture and a backlit feature wall. Now a focal point, the staircase has become a powerful symbol of connectivity, vision, and upward momentum at the heart of the organization.
Outcome and lasting impact
The reimagined office is now a future-ready space that enables NEI to host large-scale board meetings, high-profile events, and collaborative gatherings with ease. Designed to welcome global stakeholders into meaningful conversations around nuclear energy’s evolving role in a sustainable future, the environment balances function, form, and purpose. The project has achieved LEED Gold Certification and is the recipient of the IIDA Pinnacle Award and the Washington Building Congress Certification Award for Lighting Systems.
Every design decision, from spatial flow to material palette, reinforces NEI’s mission while supporting a culture of openness, dialogue, and innovation. The space is more than visually impactful – it is a manifestation of the nuclear evolved ethos, embodying NEI’s forward-thinking leadership and commitment to safety, responsibility, and transformation.
