Where heritage meets innovation
The Gallup headquarters in Washington, D.C. represents a remarkable achievement in workplace design – one that bridges the weight of historic preservation with the demands of a dynamic, forward-thinking organization. Situated at 901 F Street in Penn Quarter, one of Washington D.C.’s most vibrant and walkable neighborhoods, the building occupies an enviable position at the cultural and civic heart of the city.
The architecture and design teams faced a distinctive challenge: to modernize the workspace while honoring the landmark architecture of the Old Masonic Temple building. In addition to the architectural complexity, the 50,000-sf project demanded a comprehensive rethinking of the workplace experience. Gallup required a diverse range of meeting environments, from informal, shared huddle spaces to formal conference rooms, all equipped with the necessary technology to support the organization’s high-profile events, client engagements, and thought leadership programming.
Designing for the way people work
The design team utilized a suite of innovative solutions focused on architectural and functional objectives. The interiors were thoughtfully curated to blend clean, modern lines with stately, traditional-style finishes and material selections, choices designed to reflect both the contemporary identity of Gallup and the historical significance of the space. The former Grand Hall of the Masonic Temple, once a venue for inaugural balls and significant civic gatherings, was reimagined as a premier, client-facing space with elevated lighting, state-of-the-art A/V systems, and modern, reconfigurable furniture.
Employee well-being and productivity were central to every design decision. Natural light was embraced and maximized throughout, while dedicated zones for recharging, collaboration, and socialization were woven into the fabric of the floor plan to support the rhythms of daily work. Client-facing and public spaces were elevated through state-of-the-art solutions: refined lighting design, cutting-edge A/V systems, and modern, reconfigurable furniture. Throughout the building, original brickwork was preserved to honor the building’s heritage, and a thoughtful palette of clean, modern lines set against traditional finishes pays simultaneous homage to the building’s storied past and Gallup’s contemporary identity.
A workplace that leads the way
By harmonizing the grandeur of the historic structure with contemporary workplace requirements, the design team achieved a workplace that reflects both aesthetic distinction and operational proficiency. Business workflows have been meaningfully improved through a variety of purpose-built spaces designed to foster creativity, efficiency, and cross-functional collaboration. Upgraded technology systems meaningfully enhance Gallup’s capacity to host high-caliber events and deliver exceptional experiences.
The Gallup Washington, D.C. headquarters has been widely recognized as an award-winning architectural accomplishment. Celebrated for its synergy between the meticulously restored historic structure and its modern addition, the project is the recipient of the IIDA Global Excellence Award. Through careful stewardship of the building’s architectural legacy and a continuous commitment to form and function, the project achieves enduring value for Gallup, the company’s employees and clients, and the broader community in the capital.
