Empowering the next step

Located in North Texas near the Oklahoma border, the new B. McDaniel Intermediate School reflects Denison ISD’s continued investment in the future of its students and community. Corgan designed the replacement campus to serve 5th and 6th graders at a pivotal moment when the district’s elementary schools converge, supporting student growth and independence while expressing Denison ISD’s identity and vision for the future. The school marks this important transition with environments that encourage confidence, connection, and discovery.

A community vision

Corgan and the district recognized this project as an opportunity to engage the community to help shape its school. Early on, Corgan conducted hands-on, interactive visioning sessions with leadership, teachers, students and community members to establish a foundation for the design. The collaborative process revealed five core design principles that guided the project: creating collaborative learning environments, supporting growing student independence, establishing strong connections to nature, promoting a welcoming community-driven atmosphere, and priortizing student and staff safety.

Learning rooted in nature

Grounded in research highlighting the academic and emotional benefits of nature-centered design, the building is carefully oriented to the site’s natural topography. Classrooms frame purposeful views of the landscape, maximizing daylight while providing visual relief and a strong relationship to the surrounding environment.

Nature is woven throughout the school’s interior through colors, textures, and patterns that reflect the surrounding environment. A palette of natural materials, organic forms, and warm wood tones reinforces the connection to the outdoors and creates a calm, restorative atmosphere that supports student well-being and engagement.

Designed for choice

The school’s layout creates a robust framework for engagement, collaboration, and inquiry-based learning. As students are navigating the transition out of elementary school, the design allows them to take ownership of how and where they learn with environments that encourage exploration, choice, and movement.

High-volume collaboration spaces with abundant daylight and views of the landscape provide flexible settings for both group and individual learning. Classrooms, studios, and specialized program spaces are intentionally layered to accommodate a range of learning styles — from quiet reflective zones to active, hands-on spaces. Natural lighting, adaptable collaboration spaces, and seamless technology integration allow each environment to evolve with instructional needs.

A courtyard for connection

At the heart of the campus sits a multi-level courtyard that serves as a dynamic extension of the academic environment and the school’s central learning hub. Many interior spaces — including the cafeteria, library, maker space and classrooms — open directly to the courtyard, creating seamless connections between interior and exterior learning spaces.

The courtyard brings together an array of purposeful environments that deepen the school’s connection to nature, wellness, and experiential learning. Outdoor classrooms support lessons across disciplines, while a terraced amphitheater provides a stage for presentations, performances, and community gatherings. Play areas integrated throughout the courtyard encourage exploration, discovery and informal learning. Gardening and hands-on learning zones invite students to slow down, dig in, and engage with concepts of inquiry, sustainability education, and student stewardship.

The landscaping draws from the natural ecology of North Texas with native and adaptive plantings, ornamental trees, and a dry creek bed. Immersing students in the living landscape fosters a sense of place and an intuitive understanding of their environment.
