Ready for a Refresh
A sustainable redesign of the Christian Science Reading Room in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood adds a fresh, welcoming face to the storefront. The goal of the project was to improve visibility and signage from the street level and incorporate a clearer separation between retail, study, and multipurpose spaces on the interior. New glazing with a high R-value that reduces heat loss and an efficient HVAC system improve the sustainability of the space.

The Reading Room is adjacent to The Christian Science Plaza, home of The First Church of Christ, Scientist (The Mother Church) and extension church edifices. Drawing inspiration from these historic edifices, the design team incorporated arched forms and doorways to mimic the existing architecture. The refreshed Reading Room also greets visitors with a completely new storefront, including a more open entryway, small seating area, and new signage.
Reading the Room
Inside, the space was expanded to a total of 3,250 square feet, including the reading and study area, staff spaces, a multipurpose room, and retail area. A feature wall with a wooden map of the world distinguishes the retail zone, where a point of sale is located alongside purchasable items, including Bibles, Christian Science literature, children’s books, and music.

Most of the space is dedicated to a warm and welcoming seating area perfect for reading and contemplation. Reading tables of varying heights, cubby-style seating integrated into millwork, and bookshelves inspire children to embark on their own exploration of materials designed for young readers. Included in this space is a room for small events hosted by the Reading Room, with a highly acoustic movable glass partition that allows simultaneous use for gatherings and visitors.
