Smooth-Flying Airport Project Arriving on Time

Brent Kelley, an aviation sector lead with the architecture and design firm Corgan, said there was significant public input that went into the plans through community workshops. Consequently, a general theme emerged in the design concept relating to old Hollywood.
“The design is very unique,” he said, with the front canopy an homage to a silver screen, and the associated columns a nod to the old-style searchlights one would see at a movie premiere.
Another design goal, he said, was to make the interior simple and accessible.
“We’ve made it such that the building is very intuitive as you walk through,” Kelley said. “We want to make sure that everything is very easy to find and very easy-use.”
Kelley said specific design planning for an airport includes some unique challenges, including focusing on security needs in different forms, as well as the busy use by large numbers of people moving throughout.
“We go through a lot of data to really drive what the size of a building needs to be, how much room the functions take,” he said. “Those are some of the key things, but then you also have to remember that you’ve got airplanes sitting outside the building — fixtures, furnishings and equipment.”
