Advancing the Future of Grid-Scale Energy Storage

Located in Long Beach, California, the AES Alamitos Energy Storage Center is one of the world's largest battery energy storage facilities, providing up to 100 MW of power for four hours during periods of peak demand. Designed as a cleaner alternative to traditional peaking plants, the facility helps strengthen grid reliability while enabling greater integration of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.

The 40,000-square-foot facility houses 35 battery storage cores, inverters, transformers, switchgear infrastructure, and advanced cooling systems that work together to deliver reliable, high-performance energy storage. Supporting thousands of homes and businesses in milliseconds, the facility demonstrates the critical role energy storage plays in building a more resilient and sustainable energy future.

The design reflects the innovative technology housed within. A dynamic façade composed of aluminum composite and corrugated metal panels enhances thermal performance while creating a distinct architectural identity inspired by movement and energy. Combined with site planning, drainage strategies, and drought-tolerant landscaping, the project balances operational performance, sustainability, and visual impact.

As energy demands continue to grow alongside advancements in AI, data centers, and advanced manufacturing, projects like AES Alamitos demonstrate how resilient energy infrastructure can support the next generation of technology-driven development.
