Corgan Wins Shanghai Airport Authority Competition


Corgan, in association with our Chinese partner IPPR, has won the global design competition for the new Terminal South Satellite Concourse at Shanghai Pudong Airport (PVG).  This expansion is in support of the Shanghai Airport Authority (SAA) objective to be the premiere international hub airport in Asia.

“We are thrilled to be working with the Shanghai Airport Authority,” said David Lind, Chairman of Corgan, one of the top 10 10 architecture focused design firms in the U.S.  “This project reflects Corgan’s growth internationally and the quality of our work, especially in the aviation industry.”

The project  is planned for more than 100 boarding gates when completed, making it the largest satellite concourse in the world.  PVG currently operates two terminals with 28 and 42 gates respectively, but the airport wants to keep pace with the growth of China’s largest city, which is also its financial capital.  PVG aims to welcome 80 million passengers and handle 4.7 million tons of cargo annually by 2020 to make it Asia’s primary aviation hub.


Bold plans

“The Shanghai Airport Authority has a bold plan for Pudong Airport’s future so we’ve conceived a bold design concept that truly balances form and function,” said Jonathan Massey, Principal for Corgan’s Aviation Design Studio.  “The result is a building that creates a sense of excitement for passengers while expanding commerce for the SAA and its tenants.”

Corgan’s concept focuses on maximizing passenger flow and experience in an efficiently organized building that is designed to be beautiful yet efficient in both its operation and maintenance.  Our mission is to take the passenger experience to a higher level,” Massey said.


Another important aspect of the design of the terminal satellite concourse is that it can grow and change with the aviation industry and the city.  “Shanghai is the business leader of China, with a population today of some 24 million people.  Its airport should reflect that role and position in the global economy,” he said.

The budget for the project was not announced.  SAA invited only six selected firms from around the world to submit concepts for the new terminal satellite concourse design competition.

“This win is especially satisfying for us because the firm was founded by Jack M. Corgan, an architect who loved flying and owned his own plane,” said Lind.  “Aviation projects have always been a part of our 75-year history.”

Corgan is currently working on multiple major airport projects including Dallas Love Field, Dallas/Fort Worth International, Seattle Tacoma International, New York LaGuardia, Houston Hobby, Los Angeles International and Phoenix Sky Harbor, as well as smaller projects at over 20 airports around the world.”
