Southwest Transplant Alliance

  • 77,000 square feet
  • Dallas, Texas
  • Mixed-use Facility
The new three-story, 77,000 square feet, Southwest Transplant Alliance headquarters was designed as a true mixed-use facility—supporting office space for business function and organ recovery services all in one. The medical facility includes a Donor Care Unit,  numerous operating rooms, a CT, holding and prep rooms, staff support areas to service recovery, a multi-purpose training room, work cafe, fitness center, call center, executive suites with a family room, and more. The unique design goal was to not only design for efficient workflows in complex typologies but to keep the human element— staff members, donor families and recipients— at the forefront of the project.

The building typology and design were tailored to meet the unique program and healthcare procedures that take place in the facility. Corgan was presented with unique obstacles due to considerations of building access, security, workflow process, and discretion needed. As solutions to these considerations, private entrances, an enclosed garage, and distinct spaces for the public and the staff ensure privacy were implemented in the design. An ambulance garage is located directly adjacent to the medical floor for efficient and private arrival and departure of donors and to support the entire program's needs. A two-story parking garage with a small sub-grade parking area connects with a pedestrian sky bridge on level one of the parking garage for employee entry. Sited west of the building, a distinct visitor's parking area with five parking spaces and a motor court is present, allowing a separate entrance for the public.

The facility was designed and built around a terraced memorial garden west of the building, providing an outdoor focal point for the occupants, in addition to a serene respite spot. Windows and outdoor spaces were incorporated via balconies for an added connection to the outdoors and natural light for staff wellness. Guided by human-centric design, the office spaces are lined with gray, wood earth tones to warm the space, while the fabrics, crisp colors, and patterns were incorporated for a hospitable feel.
