Creating outdoor connections and expanding the life of an existing building.

When Centum Health approached Corgan's healthcare studio to renovate and expand an existing medical office building in downtown Scottsdale, Arizona, the request was simple — take an existing 51,000-square-foot building and expand it an additional 30,000-square‑feet of Class A lease space. As the design team dug further into the existing building’s history, they learned that it was designed by a well-known Arizona architect, Michael Goodwin. The original design, completed in 1974, was praised for its “green” design and was awarded the 1976 American Concrete Institute Award of Excellence for innovative use of concrete.

The design team took inspiration from this insight and was centered around maintaining the history of this Arizona icon. Infusing the space with natural light, creating outdoor connections, and embracing the existing exposed aggregate precast concrete panels became integral to the design. The existing building is an exterior circulation, wedge shape with an iconic elevator core on the northern edge. The 30,000-square-foot expansion will enclose the wedge shape into a rectangular building form with a centrally located new interior circulation.

The lower-level courtyard was transformed into a feature element along the north side, offering visitors and guests a space for relaxation, complete with new stairs, planters with seating, and a water feature. A two-level parking lot around the back of the building provides ample parking and shade from the Arizona sun for visitors and employees. The new interior and exterior amenity features position this iconic building for another 50 years of life and has been applauded by city review officials.
