School community with grade-level neighborhoods
Audrey Lawson Middle School, for sixth through eighth grades, is a LEED accredited, three-story building. Each level will be designated for each grade and will promote 21st century learning by the inclusion of learning common spaces for students to share and interact with each other. The new facility will include a total of 40 learning centers, science laboratories, art studios, two gymnasiums with full size basketball courts and a cafeteria all surrounding a central formal theater. Corgan was challenged with designing an advanced, 21st century school within a limited budget, while confirming buy-in from the community, who had previously felt ignored by the district and the city. To resolve this conflict, Corgan involved the community in the initial kick-off meeting. PAT meetings were scheduled once a month to keep the community, students and parents informed, as well as provide them an outlet to voice concerns, provide feedback and an opportunity to work together and allow for creative thinking. Corgan used this information to make important design decisions throughout the project.
