Disruptive Innovation Design

Corgan participated in a Design Spotlight Competition for CoreNet’s Annual Dinner Gala on April 14, 2016. The theme of the competition was “Disruptive Innovation,” which is defined as an innovation that creates a new market and value network and eventually disrupts an existing market and value network, displacing established market leaders and alliances. The term was defined and analyzed by Clayton M. Christensen starting  in 1995.  Examples of disruptive innovation are the personal computer, smartphones and mass-produced automobiles, to name a few.

For the first round of the competition Corgan submitted “Alternate Reality” as our prediction for the Disruptive Innovation of the future:

Freedom is our future.

The human race has an innate desire to find relief and escape from its existing reality. Reality confines us – society limits us through mores and institutions. Obligations tie us down. We seek to create an alternate reality where we are free to be who we want to be, where we want to be and how we want to live, irrespective of our financial, physical or intellectual status.

Alternate realities exist today through controlled virtual formats like video games, but not in actual physical form. We strongly believe that tomorrow’s disruptive innovation might already be here, but not fully developed to achieve its full range of possibilities.

Using your imagination, you can manifest a physical or virtual life of your choosing through alternate reality. If and when science makes the technology of teleportation available, “physical” alternate realities will become the most sought after commodity. A new form of real estate will have to emerge to trade in not just real spaces, but also in virtual and teleported spaces.

If alternate realities become expensive commodities like real estate, life will be much the same as it is today, with a limited portion of society able to afford this “virtual” experience. This defeats the purpose of alternate realities. Thus, the invention of teleportation will have to evolve to the extent that it can be free for all of humanity or at the very least, extremely affordable. Only if available to all could alternate reality become a disruptive innovation. As a result of people imagining their alternate realities and living in them, it’s likely the real estate profession would become obsolete. However, design might still exist as a service for people who lack imagination and/or would like to hire designers to help them with theirs. But overall, we predict people will have the freedom to choose to live in their current reality or in their own utopia - or even a parallel universe that coexists with one’s current reality.

The freedom of choice is yours. No rules. No boundaries.

Construction

Our Final Design:

The final round for this competition required that we build a physical model of our concept. Our goal was to immerse the viewers within the confines of the allotted volume by showing one concept of an alternate reality landscape and the great expanse of the human mind. The volume allotted to us was 4’x4’x4’. Assuming that in our alternate reality, that 4’x4’x4’ may not result in a cube, as the shape of a box may be different, the shape of our cube is random; the box is thinking outside of itself.

The interior of the box is clad with a series of black and white stripes and mirrors which create a kaleidoscopic illusion of infinite space. A secondary layer of holograms and music act as a menu of other alternate realities from which one can choose to escape from their current existence.
