Enhancing gate infrastructure.
This $101 million project involves the replacement of existing passenger boarding bridges and improvements to associated infrastructure within Boarding Area A at SFO. These modifications (including apron improvements, hydraulic fueling system improvements, new fixed bridges, new door penetrations, and other necessary improvements) will increase aircraft parking flexibility for existing and future aircraft. Other scopes of work include electrical and utility upgrades and fuel pit relocations. In addition, the scope was increased to include a $20 million apron improvement with four new RON parking positions and a new structure for multiple busing operations.

Lessons Learned:
This project was intended to be a fast-track delivery to upgrade the infrastructure with minimal downtime to the gate capacity.
- More in-depth and comprehensive initial reviews with the Building Department can expedite project understanding and approval
- Separating civil design from the building design review allowed for greater coordination of the airfield components
- The use of BIM and Navisworks during design allowed greater coordination and constructibility input

This project received three partnering awards and was voted Best in Class across all San Francisco projects in 2021.
